That is why late summer is the smart moment for a checkup. You are moving from open, predictable summer driving into weeks of short trips, hard stops, and crowded pickup lines. The components handling that stress are the same ones summer heat works hardest on.

What the Heat Does to Your Tires

Tires are engineered rubber compounds, and heat changes how that rubber behaves.
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures and hot asphalt accelerates a process that slowly stiffens and dries the rubber. Over time, that leads to surface cracking along the sidewalls and between tread blocks, reduced grip, and faster wear. On a vehicle living outdoors in Orange County, this happens quietly.
Heat also plays games with pressure. The penny test most people know flags 2/32, which is the legal minimum in most states rather than a safety threshold. Wet stopping distances climb sharply below 4/32, which matters when the first real rain hits an oil-slicked road after a dry summer.
Check tire age with the DOT code. Find the code on the sidewall and read the last four digits, which give the week and year of manufacture. So "2321" means the 23rd week of 2021. General guidance is to avoid tires more than six years old regardless of tread depth.
That second check connects directly to what the heat does. It is the mechanism by which a low-mileage Orange County vehicle ends up with respectable tread and rubber that no longer grips, and reading the code is the only way to catch it from the driveway.
While you are there, set pressure against the figure on the driver's door jamb placard, not the number molded into the sidewall. Those are different values and the placard is the one that applies to your vehicle.

What the Pad Measurements Mean

A technician measures pad thickness rather than eyeballing it, so it helps to know what the numbers mean and to ask for them:
  • 10 to 12 millimeters is roughly where new pads start
  • 6 to 9 millimeters is healthy, with no service needed soon
  • 3 to 4 millimeters is the recommended replacement range, and where the wear indicator typically begins to signal
  • 2 millimeters or less means replace now, because rotor damage becomes likely and a pad job turns into a pad-and-rotor job
Ask for the figure in millimeters, along with rotor measurements against the manufacturer minimum. Those two numbers tell you whether you have a full school year of driving ahead or about a month, which is considerably more useful than being told they look fine.
One more thing worth knowing: brake wear is gradual enough that most drivers adapt without noticing. You compensate for a slightly longer pedal without registering the change. That is precisely why an inspection beats waiting for a symptom loud enough to alarm you.

Warning Signs That Deserve Attention

Chirping, squealing, whistling, shaking when stopping, and grinding are all signals your braking system needs a look. A soft or low pedal, a pull to one side when braking, or a dashboard brake light are others.
