Safety Features to Prioritize for a Student Driver
Newer, well-equipped pre-owned models often carry driver-assistance technology that helps a less-experienced driver avoid trouble. As you compare vehicles, look for:
- Forward collision alert and automatic emergency braking, which help in the stop-and-go freeway traffic on the 5 and the 55
- Lane keep assist and lane departure warning, useful on long commutes and highway merges
- Rear vision camera and rear park assist, which make crowded campus and mall lots considerably less stressful
- Teen Driver technology, available on many GM vehicles, which lets a parent set speed alerts and audio volume limits and review a report card of the trip
That last one is worth asking about by name. For a lot of families it is the feature that settles which vehicle they choose, and it is easy to miss on a listing.
Many of these systems appear across Buick and GMC SUVs, though availability varies by model year and trim, so confirm what a specific vehicle actually has rather than assuming from the badge.

Three Checks You Can Do Yourself
None of these require expertise, and two matter more in Southern California than most places.
Check tire age, not just tread depth. Orange County sun degrades rubber from the outside while the tread stays respectable, so a low-mileage vehicle can be running tires well past their useful life. Read the last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall for the week and year of manufacture, so "2321" means the 23rd week of 2021. General guidance is to avoid tires more than six years old regardless of tread.
Measure tread with a quarter rather than a penny. Insert a quarter with Washington's head pointing down. If you can see the top of his head, you are at or below 4/32 of an inch and tires are coming due. The penny test flags 2/32, which is the legal minimum in most states rather than the safe threshold. A set of four is a real expense on a school-year budget, so knowing whether it arrives in month two or month twenty changes what the vehicle costs you.
Ask about the battery rather than checking that it starts. Heat is the main enemy of a car battery and Southern California supplies plenty. Ask how old it is and whether it has been load tested, since heat damage often surfaces suddenly on a cool morning rather than gradually.
Right-Sizing the Vehicle
For families, a compact or midsize SUV often hits the sweet spot for a student: a higher seating position and good visibility, room for backpacks and sports gear, and a footprint still easy to park on campus.
